1) Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. or equivalent degree and have completed no more than three years of full-time postdoctoral research experience by July 1, 2016.
2) Fluent English Proficient
3) Experience in human genetics and molecular biology. Previous experience in vascular and/or lymphatic malformations as well as on rare diseases will be positively valued.
Description: Vascular Malformations Section (INGEMM) began to form since 2011 with the creation of an interdisciplinary consultation involving Vascular Surgery and Clinical Genetics services at University Hospital La Paz. This resulted in a significant increase in the number of patients seen in the clinics with this type of pathologies, the opening of new research lines, the obtaining of funding through research projects, and in the increase of the personnel involved. The main mission of the Vascular Malformations Section is to improve the quality of life of those affected by such diseases by providing qualified assistance in the area of a national referral hospital. This requires a multidisciplinary approach in which clinical genetics, genetic counseling and the latest diagnostic techniques are integrated. All this supported by a constant research both basic and translational, and also by a close association with other INGEMM sections, mainly Clinical Genetics and Genomics, and with the Vascular Anomalies Unit (Department of Surgery) at Hospital La Paz.
Vascular malformations are abnormal blood and/or lymphatic vessels that occur during fetal development due to multiple causing mechanisms, which can cause significant morbidity and mortality. In most isolated cases the genetic cause is unknown. On the other hand, the appearance of these abnormalities in some genetic syndromes is due to mutations in known genes. The “Genetics of vascular and lymphatic malformations” project’s general objective is to find new genes causing these anomalies and expand knowledge about already associated genes. To achieve this goal we perform next generation sequencing studies: custom panels aimed to establish genotype-phenotype correlations in syndromes with known associated genes, and sequencing of complete exome for gene discovery in syndromes with no known cause or for those syndromes in which the currently known genes do not show positive results in all cases. During the two-year contract the candidate will focus on the molecular study of lymphedema and its association with other lymphatic malformations.
